A lot of trends and fad diets have come and gone, many of which are driven by good-looking influencers in social media, and to a lesser extent, by actual experts on matters concerning nutrition and fitness. Diets are the go-to solution for anyone wanting to live a more healthy life. People have tried the famed Atkins’ diet, a diet advocating a low-carb lifestyle, to shed inches off their waists. An updated version of this is the ketogenic diet, where one consumes food rich in fats and proteins instead of carbohydrates, coupled with intermittent fasting. Others stick to their own homegrown and proven diet regimens.

Like diets, there are many exercise regimens for anyone who wants to get that beach bod. People would usually turn to cardiovascular exercises for a quick fix. Most prominent of these movements are good, old-fashioned running and jogging. Cycling, usually coupled with head-banging music, is slowly becoming a favorite exercise for those wanting to tone their bodies.

But not everyone wants to do cardio. Ask any gym buff and he will probably tell you that cardio will cut your gains. He will recommend you to go to the free weights area and start putting those guns at work.

Strength training and lifting weights are core components of fitness and exercise. These are proven to provide good benefits for those who do them regularly. Aside from losing weight, strength training and lifting gives you increased muscle mass, stronger bones, and provides balance to your body.

In general, exercise also improves overall mood, gives you a confidence boost, makes you feel good, not to mention, it even improves your sex life. However, there are people who want to take exercise and body image improvement to the limit that they made it into a sport.

Bodybuilding is fitness on steroids, figuratively and literally. It has been around since the time of ancient civilizations, but back then, they lifted stones instead of metal bars and plates.

Bodybuilding: A Flashback

German Eugen Sandow is often called the “Father of Bodybuilding”. He actively promoted the act of muscle display performances during the late 19th century. Sandow also organized the first-ever major bodybuilding competition in 1901, where he served as one of the judges.

The ‘50s and ‘60s saw the emergence of more enthusiasts of the sport, alongside the proliferation of magazine covers, and more opportunities to enter competitions. It is during this time that multiple organizations dedicated to bodybuilding sprouted. One of the most notable was the International Federation of Bodybuilders or IFBB, founded in 1946. Media propelled bodybuilding into mainstream consciousness during the ‘70s. This is the same period that famous names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno came to the scene.

It is during this time that the use of anabolic steroids took center stage. The use of these performance enhancement drugs became the subject of heavy control and restrictions by organizations, particularly IFBB.

Bodybuilding is an event that puts emphasis on bulk and physique. While improvements in exercise and body mechanics were developed, so were performance-enhancing drugs.
The IFBB had hoped to make bodybuilding an Olympic sport. It conducted anti-doping tests to ensure participants are not using steroids and other banned substances. This Olympic initiative never came to fruition despite the IFBB successfully becoming a member of the International Olympic Committee or IOC in the early 2000s.

The most infamous of said enhancements are steroids. Along with other banned substances, steroids were taken by bodybuilders to further build muscle and outdo competitors in tournaments. However, this practice came under scrutiny almost as soon as they were popularized in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

The IFBB and the World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, now maintains a list of banned substances on their websites. Methylepitiostanol is nowhere to be seen in this list, yet, the prohormone was banned following the Designer Steroid Control Act passed by the US Congress in 2014. The United Kingdom, on the other hand, has maintained anabolic steroids as legal, prescription-only drugs.

The compound, more commonly known as Epistane, was first sold back in the ‘70s for medical use. However, it didn’t gain much popularity until 2009 when Recomp Performance Nutrition released it into the market under the name ‘Havoc’ and marketed it as a dietary supplement for bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts.

Proponents of Epistane maintain it is a prohormone and not a type of androgenic steroid. The latter mimics hormones, in this case, testosterone, once it enters the body. A prohormone on the other hand, once metabolized, becomes a hormone. This results in an increased amount of said hormones in the body.

How to use Epistane

People wanting to use this drug are advised to take 30 mg per day for three weeks. This increases to 40 mg per day during the fourth week. This period of consumption is called cycling and should be followed to maximize benefits from Epistane and minimize its side effects. Consumers of Epistane are not advised to take it beyond four weeks since it is proven to be highly toxic to the human liver.

The Pros of Epistane

The compound Epistane became popular due to its desirable benefits. For one, it is most helpful in cutting or shedding excess fat. Furthermore, it promotes dry, lean muscle mass growth without water retention. The gained muscle is hard compared to those made from other supplements. Lastly, it builds muscle strength.

THe Cons of Epistane


The main drawback of Epistane is its hepatotoxicity. Prolonged consumption of the compound can lead to devastating effects on the human liver. It may also cause lethargy, fatigue, loss of sex drive, and dry or sore joints to users.


Another downside to the usage of Epistane is the need for post-cycle therapy or PCT. The side effects brought on by the drug can be detrimental so it is recommended to undergo PCT. The body usually produces less testosterone after usage of Epistane since the drug provides more of it, hence the need to restore the natural hormone environment of the body.

Remi Needham of Blue Cloud recommends the use of Clomid or Nolvadex during PCT. Both drugs are selective estrogen receptor modulators, or SERMs, and are said to stimulate the production of testosterone. The former is used to treat infertility in women and is deemed as the stronger drug. Aside from mood swings, the use of Clomid may lead to vision problems.

Nolvadex is a drug used to treat breast cancer in women. While it has its own share of side effects, such as headaches and hot flashes, these are deemed milder than those from Clomid.

Clomid is recommended to be taken for four weeks, 50 mg per day on the first two weeks then down to 25 mg on the last two. Needham recommends taking 40 mg of Nolvadex per day in the first two weeks, then taper it down to 20 mg during the last two.

What else could we take?

Other people prefer taking natural supplements like zinc and pine pollen to help restore the body’s testosterone levels post-Epistane, Josh of CrazyBulk shares. Even these natural supplements have their share of side effects in the long run, but they help soften the impact of the abrupt drop of testosterone in the body during PCT. Josh adds that it is also important to stick to one’s diet and exercise routine after a steroid cycle.

Josh recommends two alternatives to Epistane, the first of which is TestoMax. He describes it as a powerful supplement that boosts testosterone levels and could be also taken during PCT due to its zinc and B-vitamin content. Anvarol may be used as well, says Josh. It doesn’t have side effects like Epistane and was developed mainly for cutting and combining amino acids and adenosine triphosphate. This helps in losing weight and gaining energy within a short period of time.

Not everyone will become a bodybuilder. For those who aspire to become a competitive one, the road to being successful, as cliche as it sounds, is not easy. This fuels the need for drugs and compounds such as Epistane.
